Woodland Hills did not look the way it does now, and was once the separate residential community of Girard. Girard was founded in the 1920s and was made up of suburban housing, a country club, and other community facilities, and was initially known as Woodland Hills. The community adopted the name officially in 1941.

Like the rest of the nation, the community changed dramatically after World War II. The population boom and subsequent increase in industry and employment shifted many rural and agricultural areas to facilitate continued industrial and residential growth.
